After months of planning and designing with local artist Helen Yates, and putting their art skills to good use their new mural had been revealed in the playground.</p> <p>The School Council had voted that the old mural needed a revamp and worked with Helen from Burning Light Arts to create an inspiring design which reflects our school values and captures our beautiful outdoor environment.</p> <p>The children were in charge of the project from the very beginning when they first invited Helen into school to discuss ideas and to ask her questions about her work. He confidently showed his photographs and answered children&#39;s questions too!&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>{gallery:Class 1 Public Speaking 2017}</p>, 20 Jul 2017 15:09:15 GMTClass 2 Public Speaking Competition<p>On Wednesday 12th July we held our annual Public SPeaking Competition for children in Class 2.&nbsp;</p> <p>The competition was judged by Brenda Brodie and she had a tough descisions on her hands!&nbsp;</p> <p>The speeches were excellent and we found out about a number of topics including water activities, scrap metal, dinosaurs, PGL, the Stone Age, Animals, countries of the world, Lego and K&#39;Nex with some fantastic visual aids, female artists, cars, Spotlight and budgies - with the real thing for us to look at!&nbsp;</p> <p>The competition was so difficult that the judge had to have a draw in the end - a Winmarleigh first!&nbsp;</p> <p>Well done to Laura for and well researched and interesting talk on Beatrix Potter and Michael for a super talk about Nascar.&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>{gallery:Class 2 Public Speaking 2017}</p>, 19 Jul 2017 16:38:52 GMTWinmarleigh Hall Visit 2017 - Day 2<p>Children continued to challenge themselves and show super teamwork on our second day at Winmarleigh Hall.</p> <p>Today they again showed courage and perseverance completing the High Ropes and Big Swing challenges.</p> <p>They also showed trust when they took part in the Sensory challenge!&nbsp;</p> <p>They had another fantastic day.</p> <p>Special thanks to Winmarleigh Hall for making us feel so welcome. Things that the children wanted including were the school building, the squirrel school logo, a tree and a rainbow. The looked at and discussed all of the key features. Children looked at the vestments and even tried on Rev. Gary&#39;s personal stoles! They then had a sensory walk of the church noting the different smells, sounds and sights that they found.&nbsp;</p> <p>Finally the&nbsp;children interviewed Rev. In the morning children all watched a theatre production of Holy Week told through the eyes of Peter on of Jesus&#39; disciples. The children loved all of the magic tricks - especially when there was walking on water!</p> <p>In the afternoon children from Key Stage 2 took part in drama workshops retelling the Holy Week events linking to our RE work about Holy Week. In groups children created the differetn scenes of Holy Week - Jesus walking on water, The Last Supper, Peter denying Jesus and the empty tomb. Today&nbsp;was the turn of all children in Class 2.</p> <p>Topics covered were microlights, Minecraft, hedgehogs, Tae Kwon Do, sheep, rugby, dairy farming and cheese production, Spain, pigs, making cards and loom bands, rabbits, goldfish and cattle farming.</p> <p>This year the competition was judged by Mr Cookson, who was impressed with the thought that had gone into subject choice, preparation and presentation. Although these elements are all important, our judge was also looking for a personal enthusiasm for the chosen topics.</p> <p>All children displayed some of these elements but the judge decided that, overall, the person who had the best balance of all these things was Josh. During the morning our Team Theme coaches Alex and Ryan organised some great team games. At lunchtime we all enjoyed a delicious Bleasdale lunch and then an opportunity to play together.</p> <p>After lunch our children were divided into teams named after some Euro 2016 teams (randomly selected!) They moved around several activities to earn points for their team. Following a spot of refreshment the afternoon finished with traditional track events - egg and spoon, skipping and sprinting.&nbsp;</p> <p>The rain held off and everyone had great fun. Thanks to all parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and friends who came to cheer us on.</p> <p>{gallery:Sports day 2016}</p>, 01 Jul 2016 20:46:25 GMTWinmarleigh Hall PGL Visit Day 1<p>On Monday 20th June we visited Winmarleigh Hall for a day of fun activities.&nbsp;</p> <p>Children from both classes took part in all of the challenges including the zip wire and obstacle courses.</p> <p>The children worked as a team to navigate the sensory trail together wearing special black-out goggles. Our guide, Amjad, welcomed us at the gates; he pointed out features of the beautiful new building and then led us inside. After removing our shoes we were shown into the foyer and Amjad explained that Muslims had to wash before beginning their daily prayers. We were taken into the special washing area and then into the prayer room. More features were highlighted and then Amjad wrote everyone&#39;s name in beautiful Arabic script for us to take back to school. They received coaching in the skills required to play handball and this was followed by the opportunity to try out their skills in two games. The competition was open to children aged 4-11 years and was designed to inspire and to encourage creative thinking by asking children to base stories on the &nbsp;Arthouses imagine fun collection of wallpaper.&nbsp;</p> <p>The competition was judged by children&rsquo;s authors Harriet Goodwin and Linda Chapman, interior designer Sophie Conran and was endorsed by Jacqueline Wilson.</p> <p>Hundreds of entries were received nationwide from counties ranging from Sussex, Herefordshire, Lancashire, Staffordshire and Cheshire.</p> <p>Jorja (Year 4) was awarded a runner up prize for her story &#39;The Golden Unicorn&#39;. They fed different kinds of birds including swans and flamingos! The children had a great time in the Discovery Hide using the binoculars and spotting different kinds of birds.&nbsp;</p> <p>Key stage 2 pupils found out about how mammals adapt&nbsp;to live in wetlands. They observed the otters, making notes about their features and behaviours and then created their own mammals making sure they had all the necessary adaptations to survive in wetland conditions. The film crew were visiting to soak up the atmosphere during this year&#39;s Superhero Bake Off for Children in Need.</p> <p>The film crew were shooting material for a short film for LloydsTSB&#39;s YouTube Channel,&nbsp; promoting this year&#39;s fund raising.</p> <p>Bakers rallied together in their teams to create their best cakes ever, ready for Celebrity Judge Tom Lister (Emmerdale) and local chef Peter Campbell aka &#39;the Happy Cook&#39; to decide which was the winning team!
