Pupils at Winmarleigh Church of England Primary School were overjoyed on their return to school after the summer holidays. After months of planning and designing with local artist Helen Yates, and putting their art skills to good use their new mural had been revealed in the playground.

The School Council had voted that the old mural needed a revamp and worked with Helen from Burning Light Arts to create an inspiring design which reflects our school values and captures our beautiful outdoor environment.

The children were in charge of the project from the very beginning when they first invited Helen into school to discuss ideas and to ask her questions about her work. Following that they spent a day designing and sharing their vision for the finished project with Helen and another couple of days colour mixing and painting the mural together.

The children were amazed when they saw the finished project and have a real sense of ownership as they can see all the ideas and designs they imagined and talked about in the first meeting with Helen.

I like the colours they are bright Jaydon, Year 1.

It lights up the school Charlotte, Year 5.

It was amazing how our ideas were taken from paper and transferred to real life Tom, Year 4.
